The Wisdom of the Enneagram

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Greetings!

I believe that everyone in their life at one time or another has asked questions, ‘who am I?’ and ‘what am I doing here?’.  Often our fast pace culture does not encourage us to look for answers to these important questions.  The Enneagram is a system that we can use for self-observation and self-inquiry. The modern Enneagram of personality type has been synthesized from many different spiritiual and religious traditions.  Much of it is a condensation of universal wisdom and philosophy that has been accumulated for thousands of years.  The Enneagram is not a religion, nor does it interfere with a person’s religious orientation.  Its major concern is ’self-knowledge’ which is an invaluable guardian against self-deception.  The Enneagram starts from where we actually are and reveals what we are capable of attaining.  There have been many books written on the Enneagram, however, the book that I recommend to start with is called, The Wisdom of the Ennegram by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson.

This work identifies 9 different personality types.  None of the types are better than the next. It is, again, about looking more deeply into our own essential nature and into the nature of the people
that we interact with regularly.  I have found this to be both helpful and comforting.  The aim is to stop living with automatic responses and to bring more awareness and presence to our daily lives.       In terms of health, this is one highly regarded tool to help us come to a place of ‘peace’ within ourselves. As we awaken to new understandings, we gain insight and clarity and ultimately, we have more personal freedom.

Learning about this might be a great holiday gift you can give to yourself this holiday season!

Reflections on Happiness from a Long Beach Chiropractor

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Giving some consideration to this year that is almost over, I realize that happiness cannot be dependent on circumstances but rather on the choices that we make.

Some people ask me, “How can I be happy if  ‘this or that’ is going on?  To me, this is a way to justify being unhappy.

Happiness is an inside job!!

It is never in a new car, a new relationship, a new home, a new job or in anything external for any length of time.   For after attaining that which we were seeking, we notice that the feeling of ’satisfaction’ is fleeting and again we are in a place of wanting, having not quite grasped ‘happiness’ enough to be able to hold onto it. So why is that?  What is going on?  Could the problem be, ‘expectations’?  It seems that so often we are disappointed because our expectations are not met and we feel unfulfilled and often angry. We may think that we have communicated our needs, thoughts or desires to someone but in reality, it was not clear.  Should we have expectations? What do you think?

Living and working as a chiropractor in Long Beach continues to bring me much happiness. The ocean air is so renewing and the negative ions off  the water actually create inner peace, and at times an actual sense of euphoria and joy.   How about trying to live by your own truth and ideals?  Let’s see how that makes you feel!  Also try using your time wisely, accomplishing something that  brings you closer to achieving your intention.  Finally, share your energy with people who honor you and those who bring out the best in you. As always, I invite your comments.

Have a Happy Magical Holiday,

Live each day to the fullest…

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Some days that is easier  and other days it seems to be harder. I find that if I start my day with an affirmation and say it with energy and enthusiasm, I can create an incredibly powerful and positive day.  It is really setting an intention and giving it the attention it deserves throughout the day.

Each day gives us all a new opportunity to focus on what is right in our lives; like the people who go out of their way to help us, like the driver who gives us the right of way, like the family and friends who unconditionally love and support us. I find that I live my life to the fullest when I am alert to what is right about my day.  I am particularly fortunate to work in the capacity of serving on a daily basis.

I love being a chiropractor!!

“Every Journey Begins With A Single Step!”

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

“Every journey begins with a single step…”

This is really one of my favorite quotes. So often we delay and find reasons for why something is too difficult or why it just wouldn’t work and if we just take that vital ‘first step’, miraculously we find that the second step is much easier and the task gets accomplished. Creating this blog has been in my thoughts for a long time but I was tentative to move forward until now. I took the first step and alas, my blog is unfolding!

I invite you to think about how this may apply to you and your life.  Help me grow this blog by letting me know what ‘first step’ is on your mind. Just click on the comment button!

Have a magical day,

Dr. Judy :)
